Frequently Asked Questions
How often do I need to tune my piano?
Our piano technician recommends that you tune your piano every 6 months. This is even more important when the student is young because during those years, the child is developing his/her pitch and musical ear. Training and practicing on an instrument that is in tune is vital.
Why does my piano go out of tune?
Typically, the two major reasons that pianos go out of tune are temperature and humidity. The piano’s soundboard will expand/contract in correlation with the humidity. These changes in turn affect the tension on the strings which causes the pitch of the piano to either go sharp or flat. The ideal humidity for a piano is about 42% while the ideal temperature is 68 degrees Fahrenheit. As such, we recommend you keep your piano away from the kitchen and bathroom as well as heaters, fireplaces, and air conditioning vents. Also please understand that this is only a guideline. Different materials are used to manufacturer pianos and all of us live in areas of varying temperature and humidity. Some users are heavy users, others only recreationally. All these variables will affect how fast a piano will need to be re-tuned.
| Cause | Effect |
|---|---|
| Low Humidity | Loose keys |
| Slipping tuning pins | |
| Cracks in the soundboard | |
| High Humidity | “Sticky” keys |
| Sluggish action | |
| Rusty strings |
What is the difference between Piano Tuning, Regulation and Repair?
Piano tuning is both a technical and an artistic skill. Our technician will tune the A to a frequency of 440 cycles per second. When this is done, the unisons and the intervals are tuned to each other to bring the entire piano in tune.Piano regulation is the adjustment of all the mechanical moving parts of the piano to precision.
There are 25 regulation points in every key in an upright piano…

…and 35 regulation points per key in a grand piano.

Our technician is trained to work and maintain all these regulation points.Piano repairs deals with broken or damaged mechanical parts within the piano.
